EMDR to heal Trauma
Eye Movement Desensitization Restructuring (EMDR), is a structured therapy that encourages the client to briefly focus on the trauma memory, while simultaneously experiencing a bilateral stimulation (typically eye movement), which is associated with the trauma memory.
EMDR is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. EMDR focuses on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors that result from a distressing experience. This allows the brain to resume a natural healing process.
EMDR relies on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model. During normal events, the brain stores memories smoothly. During disturbing or upsetting events, the smooth network doesn’t happen correctly. During EMDR therapy, the client accesses memories of a trauma event in very specific ways. Combined with eye movements and guided instructions, accessing those memories helps to reprocess and “repair” the mental injury for that memory.
